CHAPTER FOURTEEN—KELLER

Keller narrowed his eyes at the driveway. “Did I just imagine it, or did someone just drive away from this house in a cab?”

“I tried to convince them to let me drive them,” Loch replied. “Elias said he couldn’t in good conscience let me do that when I’d been petrified for half a week.”

Garret walked back inside. “Well, that’s two fewer mouths to feed. Who wants French toast, and who wants pancakes?”

Elise tailed Trevor half-carrying Holly to the couch. “We have a problem.”

“Oh, really?” Loch snorted. “Just one?”

“Holly is under an enchantment. Whatever this unknown force is that’s threatening her is draining her energy. That’s why she’s so tired all the time.”

Keller inspected Holly. She looked just as glowing and exquisite as ever—except for the fact that she drooped on the couch, not making any effort to eat anything. He tried to remember when she ate last.

Even at the dinner Johnny and the witches made before the vampires crashed the party, Keller didn’t remember her eating anything. She pushed her food around on the plate. After dinner, when he and Garret had done the dishes, he had noticed her steak untouched on her plate. She never even poked it with her fork.

“So, what are we supposed to do about it?” Loch asked. “You’re the only one who has any power around here. We’re bear shifters, not sorcerers.”

“Except Johnny,” Garret added, “and he isn’t here.”

“One of you boys has to go get him,” Trevor interjected. “Elise can detect the enchantment, but she can’t break it. You three are the only ones who know where the witches’ cave is. One of you has to go tell Johnny what’s going on and get him and the witches back here. We need to get this enchantment broken before it impacts her health.”

Holly spoke up from the couch, “Excuse me, but I have something to say about this too. I don’t want Johnny putting himself in danger over this. It could be nothing.”

“You be quiet,” Keller told her. “We’re making the decisions here.”

She smiled up at him, but that smile only made him more concerned about her. A dark shadow hovered behind her eyes, a deep, primitive knowing that everything was not okay with her.

Loch pushed himself off the kitchen counter. “I’ll go. I know where it is.”

“The hell you will,” Keller retorted. “You’ve been petrified for days, and these fools would starve to death if Garret went. I’ll go.”

“You don’t have to do this,” Holly told him.

“That isn’t for you to decide.” Keller migrated to the door. “I’ll see you soon.”

“Hey!” Garret roared. “You didn’t eat breakfast!”

Keller marched to the kitchen, snatched two pancakes off the plate at Garret’s elbow, and stuffed them into his mouth while he headed back to the door. “They’re good, man. You should go into business.”

He dove through the doors and shifted. The next minute, he bolted into the verdant woods where the trees and undergrowth swallowed his soul in pure bear.

He loped through gullies and vaulted fallen trunks.
